The 2010 FIFA World Cup Legacy Trust calls for applications from universities wanting to do research around football. The trust has granted funding to the University of Pretoria to fund a study that assesses football injuries in PSL players given the high incidences of injury.
The aim is to establish why they get injured and ultimately to work on the specific injuries and establish a maintenance and prevention programme.
The Institution acquired the three-dimensional motion capture equipment (VICON) to complete the study. The necessary data collection is underway and includes pre-season medical history on each player with daily reporting of injuries and illness by the team’s medical staff.
The study will focus on PSL players and also include the girls based at the High Performance Centre, a football and education programme funded by the trust.
